KUALA LUMPUR: PAS today questioned the rampant crime involving firearms in Malaysia and suggested that the police publish a list of the country’s firearm owners.

Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the police should re-evaluate all licensed firearm owners activity in the country so that it would not be abused.

“Police need to step up their efforts to find out how such firearms could fall in the hands of criminals because under the licensed, firearm owners are 100% under their control,” said the PAS Information Chief in a statement today.

“We hope the police will explain the number of firearm licences issued at this stage. Every detail on the licence and firearm permits issued or renewed must be recorded in a register kept by the state police chief as required in the Firearms Act 1960.”

He said this could show how firearms have fallen into the hands of irresponsible people and could be important in helping police solve such cases.

His call comes following a spate of shootings in the country, including drive-by shooting of MyWatch chief R Sri Sanjeevan on Saturday and the shooting of Arab-Malaysian Development Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi on Monday.

Sanjeevan, who was driving his grey BMW, was shot in Bahau, Negeri Sembilan by two Indian men. He is still in the intensive care unit at Serdang Hospital.

Hussain was shot dead along Lorong Ceylon in Kuala Lumpur. His wife was injured.
