Top Ten Places to Go on School Holidays

Sometimes during school holidays or on the weekends the kids will be looking for fun and interesting things to do. Malaysian Digest have compiled and listed out the top ten places to go with the kids.



1. Beaches


You can’t go wrong with water when it comes to kids and add sand to the mix you’ll have nothing short of fun, fun and more fun. Don’t forget the frisbees and other water toys. We are blessed with beaches like those in Pulau Redang, Pulau Tioman, Pulau Langkawi and Tanjung Rhu that are just some of the most popular beaches in the country.



2. Theme Parks


There are a few theme parks in Malaysia that you can go for a time of fun with your family. Genting Highlands, Sunway Lagoon, Desa Water Park and Cosmo's World Theme Park Resorts (Berjaya Times Square) would definitely bring enjoyment to the family. Most of the theme parks have family friendly fun rides that provides an alternative to the thrilling roller coaster ride for the weak-hearted.



3. Sports


As Participants

.Get the kids to get their friends and cousins together and arrange for a sports activity at a nearby futsal center or multipurpose hall. There are loads of sports activities to do and there are plenty of facilities available to serve this purpose. From the traditional badminton and football to the more extreme wakeboarding and rock climbing there are plenty of activities that would be fun for everyone.



As Spectators


There are sports competitions happening all the time. Major sports tournaments usually draw huge crowds and makes for a great atmosphere to be part of. Just find out what’s happening in sports from the media so your kids will know what the experience is like. 


4. Cinemas


Check out the latest flicks and if the kids are up for it maybe watch two movies back to back. Watching movies also can help the children to think and generates their minds about the flow of the movie. Some of the latest movies screening in local cinemas at the moment are The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Rapunzel: A Tangled Tale, and Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.




5. Nature Walks


Through nature walks you can enjoy the sights and sound of waterfalls, lakes, rivers, flora and faunas, wildlife and such. For example, at Penang Bird Park you can walk under nice shady trees and view dozens of bird species including ostriches, sea eagles, hornbills, flamingos, macaws, and grey parrots. It’s a great way to teach our children to appreciate this nature so that they understand the importance of preserving our natural resources.



6. The Arts (theaters and art galleries)


Art galleries would definitely interest those who like art. Most of the popular art galleries are National Art Gallery, Wei-Ling Gallery and Valentine Willie Fine Arts that constantly hold exhibitions by international as well as local artists. Theaters would be a fun experience as well for plays and concerts. The experience Some of these places organizes workshops for budding young artists too.



7. Recreational


Ulu Bendul at Negeri Sembilan and Kanching Waterfall, Kanching Recreational Forest are excellent places for picnicking and camping especially when there are cascading waterfalls. The recreational forests are great for weekend getaways and picnics. The forests have special appeal for nature lovers in search of peace and serenity and definitely worth a visit.



8. Libraries



Many may not know this but there are many other libraries aside from the renown central repository’, National Library. There are also Petaling Jaya Community Library (PJCL), Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and, for edgier literary works, you can also visit Pustaka Kiri Malaysia . Kuala Lumpur Children's Library is located beside the Kuala Lumpur Library. A variety of services / activities are available specifically catering to library members between the ages of 4 and 12 years. If those places fail to tickle the children’s fancy then you can always take them to the good old bookstores such as Borders and Kinokuniya.



9. Zoos


Kids love animals and are curious about them as they don’t get to see much of them apart from those shown on TV and domestic pets. Some of the popular zoos that you can see these animals would be the National Zoo, Malacca Zoo, Taiping Zoo and Sunway Petting Zoo. Improvements have been made on these zoos to make the experience more interactive and educational for youths.



10. Museums


Usually, during school holidays, museums hold thematic exhibitions. Some of the popular museums are the National Museum, Customs Museum in Negeri Sembilan and the Archeological Museum in Lembah Bujang. These places would be educational for children who seek to learn about history.
