Heavy Rain Causes Floods, Forcing 428 to Evacuate in Terengganu

KUALA TERENGGANU, 1 JANUARY, 2012: The strong winds and heavy rain which lashed Terengganu on the eve of New Year's Day last night have caused rivers to overflow and forced the evacuation of 428 people in several villages in the Besut and Setiu districts.

The state government portal on floods reported that four relief centres have been opened, two each in Besut and Setiu.

It said 316 people were being accommodated at the Apal multipurpose hall and 29 at Sekolah Bukit Tempurung in Besut while 73 people have been put up at the Guntong Rukun Tetangga hall and 10 at the Desa Jaya community hall in Setiu.

A spokesman of the State Drainage and Irrigation Department said several rivers in Besut and Setiu have burst their banks.

The level of Sungai Setiu in Kampung Langkap was at the danger point of 22.8 metres as at 11 am today.

Several events for ushering in the new year last night had to be cancelled owing to the rain, one of which was a cycling event for youths from the Gong
Badak Stadium to the Batu Buruk Square.

The Batu Buruk beach, a popular haunt of tourists, was knee-deep in water last night but the tide has receded since.
