Glittering Fireworks Welcome 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, 31 DECEMBER, 2011: Glittering fireworks lit up the night sky over Dataran Merdeka here tonight as cheering revellers welcomed 2012 and bid farewell to an eventful year.


Fireworks displays were also held at various locations in the capital, including the Kuala Lumpur City Centre and Bukit Bintang.
As the cheers died down, the "Ambang Merdeka 2012" concert featuring local and international artists was held at Dataran Merdeka much to the delight of some 50,000 revellers, who thronged the venue as early as 6pm.
The celebration was organised by the Ministry of Information Communication and Culture in collaboration with the Ministry of Federal Territories and Urban Well-being and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and sponsored by AmBank Group.
The auspicious occasion was graced by Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim and wife, Datin Seri Masnah Rais, Kuala Lumpur mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail and AmBank Group chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim.

Apart from welcoming the New Year, revellers were also in for a musical treat by local singers like Datuk M. Nasir, Jamal Abdillah, Faizal Tahir, Awie, Hujan and Mizz Nina.
The highlight of the New Year celebration was the presentation of the Anugerah 1Malaysia Tersohor by Rais to the national football team that won the gold medal at the SEA Games.
"We are proud of their achievement and the ministry has decided to present them the award," said Rais in his speech that was telecast live by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).

Meanwhile, at the KLCC's Petronas Twin Towers, about 50,000 revellers, including foreigners and tourists, gathered to usher the new year.
On the stroke of 12.01am that marked the arrival of the new year, a dazzling fireworks display lighted up the skyline.
Similar celebrations were also held at Jalan Bukit Bintang, especially at BB Park, Fahrenheit88, Lot 10, Plaza Low Yat, Pavilion, Sungei Wang Plaza and Starhill Gallery.
In IPOH, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir joined thousands of revellers at the vicinity of Indera Mulia Stadium to usher in the New Year with a colourful display of fireworks that lit up the night sky.
During the celebration, Zambry also launched the Visit Perak Year 2012 and the tourist police unit.
In MELAKA, the Yang Dipertua Negeri Melaka Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam joined thousands of revellers who thronged the Dataran Menara Taming Sari in Banda Hilir to usher the new year which ended with a spectacular fireworks display.
The highlight of the celebrations in Meleka was the gathering of 1,000 super bikers who set a record in the Malaysian 'Book of Record' for the largest gathering.
In PENANG, Padang Kota Lama dazzled with cultural shows, music and entertainment while the 10,000 odd revellers were treated to a colourful display of fireworks from Bukit Bendera.
