C&C Eyes 70 Pct Sales From Mercedes CKD Units In 2017

KUALA LUMPUR -- Cycle & Carriage Bintang Bhd (C&C), the largest dealer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Malaysia, expects the locally-assembled completely knocked down (CKD) models to contribute up to 70 per cent to the company's sales this year.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Sdn Bhd itself had reportedly said that the CKD models could contribute two-thirds to its total sales this year.

Jardine Cycle & Carriage Ltd (JC&C) Regional Managing Director Haslam Preeston said key models such as the S- class and E-class were locally assembled.

"So we are looking at the contribution from CKD and the imported completely built-up (CBU) units to stand at a ratio of 70:30," he told reporters after chairing C&C's 49th annual general meeting here, today.

C&C is a member of Singapore-listed JC&C. It sold about 11,800 units of passenger cars in Malaysia last year, up nine per cent from 2015.

Asked on the sales outlook this year, Preeston said the company hoped to maintain the same growth performance as last year.

"The sales would mainly be driven by the domestic economy as there are mixed signals in the market here," he said.

However, he noted that the Malaysian market remained very competitive this year as there were many other dealers.

"Last year, C&C's total industry volume was down by 13 per cent as the market was very tough back then," he added.
