KUALA LUMPUR: MIC must produce winnable and credible candidates to contest in the 14th General Election, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Najib, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, said the choice of candidates for MIC must also appeal to all races.

“I know MIC wants to contest in all seats given to them before, but the pre-condition is to produce winnable and credible candidates, and must appeal to all races, not just the Indians.

“In reality, not a single constituency in Malaysia that has Indians as the majority,” he said at MIC’s 71st general assembly here, today.

He then thanked MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam for expressing his condolences over the recent tahfiz tragedy, adding that it was a good example to show that MIC cared for all.

“This is a trait that must be passed down to all levels (in the party).

“Of course you give priority to the Indians but you must show your care and concern to all,” he added.

Earlier, Dr Subramaniam in his presidential address, expressed his condolences over the tahfiz fire tragedy in Keramat last week.

“I pray that the families of the victims be granted strength to go through this difficult time,” he said.

At about 5am on Sept 14, a fire broke out on the third floor of the school, killing 21 students and two wardens.

It was reported that city police chief Datuk Amar Singh, had confirmed the arrest of seven individuals, aged between 11 and 18, to facilitate investigations into the case, which was believed to have been triggered by revenge.
