MOST girls dream of a fairy tale wedding.
But they don’t expect to marry a green ogre.
Yet Amanda Gibb couldn’t be more happy with her new husband Nathan, who dressed as Shrek for their special day.
And the 44 year-old businesswoman complimented the groom’s unusual outfit by dressing up as Princess Fiona.
The pair, who have an ironing firm called Iron Maidens, tied the knot at Priory Hall registry office in Dudley yesterday.
Dressed in Shrek’s trademark swamp-stained smock and string waistcoat for the ceremony Nathan, aged 39, cheekily told Amanda: “I do take this ogre.”
Buzz Lightyear, the Gingerbread Man, Snow White, Minnie Mouse and Mr T from the A Team were among the guests as the couples’ family and friends followed their lead and turned up in fancy dress.
Amanda and Nathan, who have been together for eight years, came up with the idea to raise money for Cancer Research, following the deaths of seven of their customers from the disease.
It has been a long standing joke between the couple that they are like Shrek and Fiona, from the animated comedy film featuring the voices of Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz.
Nathan said: “It was originally only going to be a little ceremony, but over the last 15 months we have had seven customers die, and two of Mandy’s very close friends have got breast cancer.
“So we thought it would be a great idea to raise money for Cancer Research. Our guests are all making donations to the charity and we hope to inspire others to give money to the charity when they read our story.
“When we first got together, our friends would tease us saying that we would be the next to get married.
“I always said to Mandy that if we ever did get married that I would give her a fairy tale wedding.
“But our friends would say the only fairy tale wedding we could have is one like Shrek and Fiona.
“It was a standing joke!
“Then one day while we were watching TV Shrek and Fiona came on. We just looked at each other and thought, ‘Why not?’”
Nathan had his costume specially made by shop Tailor Made in Harborne, Birmingham, while Amanda sourced her princess dress from a medieval costume website.
The couple, who were both painted head to toe in green paint for the occasion, hope to raise £1000 for Cancer Research.
Nathan continued: “It’s an honour to do this for the cause. If we can get one person to just go to the doctors, and raise awareness then that is the most important thing.
“Today has been a stressful day but good. It’s been worth it.
“We all like a laugh and it is for a good cause. It has just been great.”
Nathan’s sister Lesley Smith, aged 48, who dressed up as ‘Brother Dick’ with an ‘Only Gay in Dudlay’ sign round her neck, said: “It is just fantastic. It is a cause that is important to them.
“They have always joked to each other that they are just like Shrek and Fiona.
“Nathan is a big joker so it is quite typical of his personality to do something like this.”
After the ceremony the wedding party moved onto The Courthouse pub in Kingswinford for the wedding banquet and celebrations.
Lesely added: “It’s Nathan’s local pub so they know what they letting themselves in for.
