GEORGE TOWN: Rescuers are still combing the scene of a deadly landslide which struck a construction site at Lengkok Lembah, Tanjung Bungah here this morning – but angry reaction to the accident is already emerging.

Tanjung Bungah Residents Association chairman Meenakshi Raman has demanded that the state government set up a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate the cause of the landslide.

Meenakshi said today’s incident, which has claimed innocent lives, should be the last of its kind.

“Let us stop this once and for all. Enough is enough!

“Why should innocent lives be (taken) at the expense of development?” she said when met at the scene.

Meenakshi said whenever civil liberties groups comment on the state’s hillslope developments, the Penang government would brush them aside, calling them “irrational.”

“But look at what has happened!” she said.
