Although absence makes the heart grow fonder, technology has made it more bearable to be apart from loved ones and a Chinese migrant worker found a way to make the most of it without spending a single cent.

Ge Yuanzheng, from the central Hainan province, China, moved to Shanghai to earn money for his family by working in the construction sector that pays 200-300 yuan (RM120-RM180) per day, SCMP reports.

Like many migrant workers in China, Ge lives on a tight budget and he revealed that he has never visited any attraction sites as he feared he would waste his hard-earned money.

But more important to him is his family and he always made it a point to contact them every day via video calls.

Since he is very frugal with his money, Ge utilises the perfectly good and free WiFi at a subway station in the eastern China metropolis.

“I don’t want to spend money, but I miss home and want to talk to my family,” he was quoted as saying.

He makes his way to the subway station every night to make the call home, and during one of those calls a passer-by caught a photo of him crouching next to a power outlet and posted it on the Internet.

Ge’s wife was reported to have been upset when she saw the photo as she was thinking about all the times that her husband walked around at night just to tell her he loved her but was later brightened when he told her that he was fine and doing well.

However, the report also mentioned that Ge was not the only one being economical. As his wife, who was not named, would also ‘steal’ their neighbour’s WiFi when she needs to use the Internet.
