ALOR SETAR -- The state government hopes financial industry players will provide more exposure and education on digital banking, including the benefits of electronic payment (e-payment), to Kedahans.

Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, said this is to ensure the people have better access to more banking services following changes in the financial sector due to the introduction of e-payment.

“A diverse range of financial products that cover the needs of all customer segments is important to ensure the economic strength of a community.

“To meet rural banking needs, more than 500 bank agents operating in the state took part in a banking agent initiative,” he said in his speech at the launch of the Kedah Financial Carnival here today.

The text of his speech was read by State Industry and Investment, Domestic Trade, Consumer Affairs and Cooperatives and Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle Committee Chairman, Datuk Dr Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Bashah said Kedah remained committed to continue being a leader in the field of rice production via incentives from the Muda Agriculture Development Authority, among them, yields from mini estates or padi estates, to ensure a productive sector.

He said this strategy is to stimulate and diversify the state economy to achieve high growth, attract quality investors, and increase the income potential of Kedahans.

“Kedah’s economy achieved 3.2 per cent growth in 2016, boosted by services and manufacturing, while gross domestic product per capita increased from RM14,034 in 2010 to RM19,152 in 2016.

“The services sector continues to spur growth, contributing 55.3 per cent of the state’s gross domestic product and services-based economic activities such as tourism are the largest contributors,” he added.

The three-day Kedah Financial Carnival held at the TH Hotel & Convention Centre here is aimed at raising awareness and empowering the public on financial knowledge.

The carnival also provides the public access to various banking and insurance services made available by local banks.
