The world is in shock after news that a gunman opened fire in a Florida high school earlier this morning (local time) which resulted in the demise of 17 students and injured 50 others.

CBS Evening News uploaded a video of the horrifying incident on Twitter – revealing countless students crouching under their desks as the 19-year-old assailant, Jesus Cruz, inflicted terror with an assault rifle after 2pm on Wednesday (14 January, USA time).

The video which was captured by a student of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, evidently sent chills down viewers’ spine as the sound of gunfire, coupled with ear-piercing screams of the victims can clearly be heard.

But the footage proved to be more heart-breaking when students are seen fleeing for their lives as a nearby male student yelled, “Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god.”

In a separate video that is presumably taken from inside one of the classrooms by one of the students, a victim is seen lying in a pool of blood while a petrified girl ducks to the floor – hiding from the malicious gunman.

According to Daily Mail, teachers and students promptly sought refuge in multiple classrooms as the teachers directed the students to lay hidden in confined spaces, after the sounds of gunfire echoed throughout the school in Parkland.

The gruesome event was also caught in pixel, as students under lock down shared detailed descriptions of the ordeal in real time – highlighting that the shooter entered classroom to classroom, while the students hid under their desks and chairs.

ABC News reported that parents promptly rushed to the school and were left in agonising pain as they prayed for their children’s safety and well-being.

Fortunately some parents heaved a sigh of relief as their children informed them that they are safe and alive.

“My daughter is with a friend and is trapped in a closet. She is afraid to talk out loud. It's like a war zone here with cops, machine guns, helicopters.

“The FBI is here, everyone is here. I told my daughter not to call me because I don't want anyone to hear her voice,” Caesar Figueroa relayed.

Michelle on the other hand stated that her daughter had informed her earlier that a shooting broke out in school via a text message, but has since gone mum.

“She was texting me up until about four minutes ago and now she's not responding and I'm getting nervous,” she conveyed.

“Last she texted me she was in a building from across where the shooting was at. I'm on pins and needles because she isn't responding to me now.”

Another student named, Crystal, urged her mother to avoid the school and assured the mother that she is safe, but was unable to call her as the teacher had instructed the students to be quiet.

Officials have stated that the suspected assailant has been taken into custody.
