Its minister, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said 7,000 more applications would be processed before the new placement was carried out in June.

“The programme based on humanitarian grounds is to allow teachers who are separated from their spouses because of their job location to be together in one place. This is not necessarily for teacher couples alone, there are also police couples, those working in hospitals and others.

“The number of couples living apart for seven and eight years have mostly been reduced, now remaining are those living apart for five years and we will reduce the number soon,” he said.

He was speaking at a press conference after officiating the strategic cooperation through the Digital Education Transformation Programme 21st Century between the Education Ministry and Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM).

At the event, Mahdzir also launched the Unifi Mobile ‘Jasa Pack’ for teachers introduced by TM which will provide them with unlimited data, and without a contract at only RM59 a month.

Commenting on the Pakatan Harapan manifesto to make national schools the school of choice, Mahdzir said what was created by the Barisan Nasional government now is the people's choice.

He said the government was carrying out school maintenance every year for the comfort of students and teachers as well as ensuring quality teachers.

He said, until now 5.2 million students choose government schools while around 140,000 choose international or private schools.
