EC To Remove Names Of Deceased Upon Verification

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) will strike out the name of the dead from the electoral roll for the 14th General Election (GE14) upon verification by the National Registration Department (NRD).

EC chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the commission could not simply delete any names from the electoral roll without a death verification.

“Following the issue of MM Narayanan Nair s/o T. Narayanan Nair, who died in 2003 but is still listed in the electoral roll, we will take immediate action to strike out his name.

“The EC has checked and discovered that his name has never been taken out from the electoral roll since he was registered in 1994.

“In this respect, claims that his name had been deleted before and reinstated for GE14 is untrue,” he added.

It was reported that MM Narayanan Nair’s daughter had alleged that her father’s name was not listed in the electoral roll when an online check was made last year, but the name re-appeared this year.

She lodged a police report regarding the matter at the Teluk Ayer Tawar, Seberang Prai Utara, Penang yesterday (April 25).

MM Narayanan Nair’s `resurrection’ has gone viral when the matter was highlighted. His daughter even urged everyone to check the status of their loved ones who had passed on.
