Syed Saddiq Turns Down Second Offer From Oxford University

KUALA LUMPUR: Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman announced on Wednesday that he has rejected a second offer to study at Oxford University.

The Muar Member of Parliament and PPBM Youth Chief wrote on his Facebook page that he turned down a conditional Chevening scholarship to obtain his Master's in Public Policy at the prestigious institution.

"For the second time, I'm forced to reject the offer because I have been given the trust and responsibility by Muar voters to bring their voices to Parliament.

"In fact, I believe my job is far bigger than that – to reform and serve the people of Malaysia," the 25-year-old wrote.

Chevening is a British international awards programme aimed at developing leaders around the world.

Syed Saddiq said it was difficult for him to explain his decision to his parents, who wanted him to continue his studies at Oxford.

"I understand that as parents, they want to see their child excel in academia," he wrote.

Syed Saddiq said it would be unlikely for him to get a third offer from Oxford. However, he said he is inspired by people who had contributed to Tabung Harapan Malaysia and those who provided suggestions or plans that are critical to rebuilding the nation.

"The little things make the biggest difference, you're all my inspiration.

"I have to put this dream of mine behind (me). To me, rebuilding the nation is more important," he added.

Syed Saddiq first turned down a RM400,000 scholarship to study at Oxford last October.
