Kuala Lumpur, Fri -- State Umno leaders are determined to make changes to ensure that the party remains relevant and receives support from the people, especially in facing the 13th general election.
They believe that renewal in the party's struggle and in its approach and strategies need to be done immediately, so that Umno can fulfil the people's needs.
Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said, who is also the state Umno Liaison deputy chairman, promised to implement the changes and to reunite the party leaders in the state.
He hoped that they would set aside their differences and work together for the well-being of the people.
"This is our shared hope. What is important is that we give the best service to the people," he said when met on the final day of the 2009 Umno General Assembly, here, today.
Melaka Umno Liaison chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said Umno targeted a rise in the number of Malay voters in the state, from the current 47 per cent to 60 per cent by the next general election.
The Melaka chief minister also believed that support for Umno would increase after the state-level Wanita, Youth and Puteri chiefs were allowed to accept new members in order to expedite the membership approval process.
"The amendments made to the Umno constitution have also made it easier for us to attract young people to join the party," he said. -Bernama Related News
