KUALA LUMPUR, 21 JAN, 2010: eBay and PayPal today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with SME Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp. Malaysia) to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia leverage on the global business opportunities that e-commerce brings.
The partnership announced earlier today at a seminar entitled, “Empowering Businesses Online with eBay and PayPal” which was aimed at equipping SMEs with knowledge needed to market their products internationally and gain a competitive advantage in the challenging economy.
This is the first time a Government body in Malaysia is partnering with eBay, the world’s largest online marketplace with over 89 million active users and PayPal, a global leader in online payments, with over 78 million active accounts worldwide. Prior to Malaysia, eBay had successfully launched similar programs with the Foshan government in China, as well as the Department of Industrial Promotion and the Department of Export Promotion in Thailand.
“SME Corp welcomes the opportunity to enter into this partnership with eBay and PayPal, both global leaders in e-commerce. It reflects our mission of helping SMEs to expand their businesses by going online to reach new customers,” said Datuk Ir. (Dr.) Mohamed Al Amin Hj. Abdul Majid, Chairman of SME Corp Malaysia.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer eBay Greater China, Southeast Asia and Japan, Jeff Liao said with 15.8 million internet users and e-commerce expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of over 28% from 2006-2010, Malaysia has a tremendous potential.
“By collaborating closely with SME Corp, we aim to supply the world with Malaysian products that are of high quality and good value, with respect of intellectual property rights,” added him.
Under this public-private sector partnership, eBay PayPal and SME Corp Malaysia are pleased to provide education courses for SMEs in Malaysia in the form of workshops or phone consultation programs that are conducted by certified eBay Education Specialists in Malaysia.
Alternatively, for those who would like to outsource their online sales channel, they can register for the Trading Assistant Program which is an end-to-end service by eBay experts to sell their products on eBay. Both eBay and PayPal will also dedicate account support to SMEs.
To encourage SMEs to start selling on eBay, there will be a waiver of insertion fees for the first 100 eBay listings and selected features, as well as up to 25% discount on fees for the first 100 payments received via PayPal. Related News
