Kuala Lumpur, Tue. – Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is set to affect some major changes to the constitution of UMNO when party delegates gather at the 60th general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) this week.
There will be 2,539 delegates who will be deliberating and voting simultaneously on doing away with the quota system for party elections and increasing the number of party members eligible to vote for the top leadership.
“UMNO must be seen to be more open, more democratic and more inclusive, and with this UMNO will again be accepted by the rakyat,” said a circular which was distributed to party delegates which briefed on the value and benefits of making changes.
According to an UMNO source, one of the changes being proposed is that heads of Umno branches will now be able to themselves recruit members as a way to increase the membership numbers and recruit more youth into the party.
The UMNO supreme council has decided that vice-president Dato Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein will lead the council Steering Committee on Constitutional Changes so that he can oversee and manage the changes that wil take place.
The Steering Committee will be made up of representatives from UMNO state liaison, branch, as well as qualified individuals to give their feedback and viewpoint on the exercise.
