No Decision on Six-month Notice of Election	\| Print \|

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 JULY, 2010: The PKR-DAP-PAS pact has denied a report that its leaders in Selangor will issue a six-month notice of election.

PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) vice-president and Selangor PKR chief Azmin Ali said the matter was never raised for discussion among the pact's leaders.

"It was never discussed. No decision to that extent. They also can't decide at state level as the matter must be brought for discussion at the national level.

"This is a policy matter, involving three parties. The chairman of the state PR (Pakatan Rakyat) will bring it to the national committee first. So far, the issue has never been discussed," he said when contacted.

A news portal quoted Selangor PAS information chief Roslan Shahir Mohd Shahir as saying that the state would give a six-month notice of election as the decision to serve advance notice was made at the state PR council meeting on July 19.

Roslan was reported to have said that the advance notice would strengthen the democratic practice in the country and, with it, political parties could lay the groundwork unlike in the normal practice where the dissolution of state assemblies and parliament was announced at the last minute.

Selangor DAP chairman Ean Yong Hian Wah also denied that the three parties administering Selangor had made such a decision.

Yong, who is also a Selangor executive councillor, said in a statement that the dissolution of the state assembly was the ruler's prerogative and could not be decided solely by the government.

He also said that any move to dissolve the state assembly also needed the approval of the national leadership council.

"At this point, it is premature to make any statement which alludes to when state elections may or may not be held. Pakatan Rakyat's focus remains on governing the state with integrity for the good people of Selangor," said Yong.
