KUALA LUMPUR, 30 JULY, 2010: The incentive scheme for back up athletes who are still in school would be enhanced to inspire them further in their quest for success.
Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the incentive would not be in cash, but in other forms, like awarding full credit points for their co-curriculum subject when students compete in international competitions.
"It is hoped that the incentive will help inspire and spur them towards success. They will also not consider their participation in sports as a wasteful activity," he told reporters at the victory celebration of the Malaysian contingent that emerged overall champion in the Asean Schools Games (ASG) 2010, at Sekolah Sukan Bukit Jalil here Friday.
Muhyiddin who is also the Deputy Prime Minister also awarded lap top computers for medal winners at the Games.
Among recipients were ASG sprint king Ambrose Jilom, six-gold medal winner in Gymnastics, Elaine Koon, the badminton team, men's hockey team and netball team, all winners of gold medals at ASG.
Malaysia emerged as the overall champion in the ASG, held here from July 15-18, with 45 gold medals.
Muhyiddin said his ministry and the National Sports Council (NSC) would conduct an in-depth review of the current incentive programme with a view to add new and better values.
"The incentives are also an indication to athletes that if they excelled in sports and represented the country at international competitions, they will be rewarded by the ministry," he said.
He added that the implementation of the 1Student, 1Sports programme next year was also progressing well.
"Among initiatives taken are to restructure the sports divisions and add sports teachers in schools and enhance relationship with leaders in districts and states to build better infrastructure or upgrade existing ones," he said.
