abdul_aziz_mohd_yusofPUTRAJAYA: Malaysians residing overseas might be able to vote at the 13th General Election as amendments to the election regulations will be tabled during the current parliament sitting.

Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof (pic) said Monday that the EC had checked with the Attorney-General and found that there was no need for a constitutional amendment.

“All that is required is an amendment to the election regulation and the forms must state that overseas Malaysians must come back to Malaysia at least once in five years to be eligible to vote,” he said at a press conference.

Currently, only full-time Malaysian students and their spouses and civil servants and their spouses are eligible as postal voters.

This has led to complaints by those who are not within the category, such as private sector employees working overseas.

So far, about 20,000 have registered to be postal voters, according to the EC.

A Parliamentary Select Committee on Electoral Reforms in its report in April, among others, recommended that postal voting be expanded to all Malaysians overseas.
