Minister: AES Cameras Have Proven to Reduce Accidents

SITIAWAN: The safety of the public should not be compromised as the Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras have proven to reduce accidents, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said.

He said the two municipal councils in Penang should have been more careful when making statements of not cooperating with the Ministry to install the cameras.

"The Consumer Association of Penang has also urged the Government to set up the cameras without anymore delays," he said after presenting free spectacles to 239 poor folks at the Lumut MCA headquarters here on Sunday.

"They feel it is important and the people should be educated to adhere to traffic laws," he added.

Kong, however said he has yet to receive any reports of Penang and Seberang Prai Municipal Councils rejecting the installation of the AES cameras.

He also said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng would get the feedback from the two municipal councils over the issue.

It was reported that the Penang Municipal Council had rejected the installation of the AES as it was a burden to the people and it was not designed based on traffic plans.

Some 39 AES cameras for speed trap and 18 at traffic light junctions have been planned to be installed in Penang.
