TEMERLOH: Police shot dead one of four "KK Merah" gang members during a shootout at a palm oil plantation in Sanggang, near here, early Sunday morning.

Pahang police chief Datuk Sharifuddin Ab Ghani said the drama unfolded after a police team from the Serious Crimes Division tried to stop a car at a traffic junction after the Temerloh Toll Plaza (Jerantut-bound) at 1.20am.

However, he said the car, believed to be stolen, sped off along a road leading into a palm oil plantation near Sanggang and skidded off the road.

"When policemen approached the vehicle, they suddenly heard shots fired from the car. Police returned fire and found a man dead at the wheel from gunshot wounds," he told reporters, here.

Sharifuddin said police also found a revolver with three bullets, three bullet shells, a laptop, a parang and a slab of cannabis.

"The dead man's identity was Muhamad Azirywan Mohd Azlan, 21, from Perkampungan Cenderawasih, Kuantan who was involved in seven robberies and a murder case here, Kuantan, Bentong and Selangor.

"Another gang member, aged 16, who was involved in eight robberies was caught in Jalan Kampung Lantin, Chenur at 1.30am on Oct 7.

"Two other gang members, aged 22 and 28, managed to flee the scene on a motorcycle. We are hunting for them."

He urged those with information on the duo to go to the nearest police station to help in investigations.
