KUALA LUMPUR: Kelab Putera 1Malaysia (KP1M) volunteers will leave for Jordan on Oct 19 to provide aid to Syrians who are seeking shelter at refugee camps in Jordan.
Kelab Putera 1Malaysia president Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim said the 56-member team, including doctors and media representatives, would be bringing 300 tons of food, medical supplies and various other basic needs and they would be in Jordan until Oct 31.
"Upon arrival in Jordan, the mission members would head for the Al-Mafraq refugee camp, an area bordering Syria and located about 80km from the Jordan capital, Amman," he told reporters here today.
Also present was the Jordanian Ambassador to Malaysia, Maher A. Lukasha.
Abdul Azeez said about 60,000 Syrian nationals were now staying at the Al-Mafraq camp as well as several other camps set up by the Jordanian authorities to accommodate the increasing entry of Syrian nationals who were escaping from the conflict between the government and rebel groups in their country.
He said the Malaysian envoy in Jordan, Datuk Abdul Malek Abdul Aziz and 70 Malaysian students in Jordan would provide assistance to the KP1M team throughout their stay in that country.
Meanwhile, Lukasha thanked the Malaysian government and KP1M for helping the Syrian refugees in Jordan.
"This humanitarian aid clearly shows the sincerity of the Malaysian people to help the Syrian refugees who are currently facing various difficulties and hardships.
"It also clearly shows the spirit of good cooperation between Malaysia and Jordan in handling the refugees," he said.
Maher said the total number of Syrian refugees who arrived in Jordan had increased to more than 200,000 people so far and it was estimated around 60,000 people were staying in a refugee camp.
He said the Jordanian government had set up a new refugee camp to cope with the increasing number of refugees and the Jordanian authorities will assist the KP1M humantarian aid team in ensuring that aid supplies reached all the refugees.
