SERI ISKANDAR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said any time was a suitable time for the 13th General Election, but it was up to the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to choose a date."It depends on Datuk Seri Najib's decision. My opinion is only my opinion. I feel we have reached the end, so it's not a problem whether it's held end of this year or early next year," he told reporters after Universiti Teknologi Petronas' (UTP) convocation ceremony, here Sunday.
He said Barisan Nasional (BN) could wait for a suitable time to finalise the date for the dissolution of Parliament to give way for the general election but that would also give the opposition time to prepare.
Commenting on the RM40 million political donation received by Umno Sabah, he said such general election donations to all parties be they ruling parties or the opposition were nothing new.
These donations were aimed at protecting the donors' interests no matter which party won, he added.
Earlier, Dr Mahathir, who is also UTP's chancellor, described the 15-year period since its formation as a brilliant achievement by the university not just for its academic recognition but also as having the potential to be among the best internationally.
Funding by global giants, with RM136 million (US$ 45 million) from Schlumberger and sponsoring of professorships were also proof of these companies' recognition and confidence in UTP, he added.
