Four in Family Perish in Crash

The lorry laden with paddy. Pix: The StarThe lorry laden with paddy. Pix: The StarALOR SETAR: Four members of a family were killed and one seriously injured after the car they were in was involved in a collision with a lorry nearby Kampung Permatang Limau, Pokok Sena near here Thursday.

In the 3pm incident, the lorry laden with padi was believed to have skidded into the path of the family's Perodua Viva, which heading to Kebun 500 from Pendang.

Kota Setar deputy police chief Supt Rohana Omar said the dead were Shafie Hamid, 56, his wife Faridah Ani, 55, and their children Ibtihar Shafie, 26, and Nurul Faiz Shafie, 24.

Rohana said all four died at the scene and that the couple's 15-year-old son, Mohd Iqbal Shafie, was seriously injured and had been admitted to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) here.

"We do not know who was driving the car because when the investigating officer arrived, all the victims had been brought out of the car," said Rohana.

The family was from Kampung Kubang Pisang, Kubur Panjang, Pendang.

The lorry was on its way to Kubur Panjang from Tualang near here.

The victims bodies were sent to the HSB mortuary. The lorry driver was not injured.
