KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Dr William R.Stevenson became the first non-Malay officer in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) to wear three stars when he was promoted from Major General to Lieutenant General, the third highest rank in the Army.
The wearing of rank was officiated by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in a ceremony at the Defence Ministry here Wednesday.
William, 58, when met by reporters after the ceremony said non-Bumiputeras have equal opportunities to be promoted in ATM.
"The opportunity is there as there are only a handful of non-Bumiputras," he said.
Therefore he hopes more young non-Bumiputras will make ATM as a career.
Prior to this, William was the executive director of Malaysian Institute Defence and Security (MiDAS).
He began his career in the ATM in 1974 as a cadet officer.
Also present at the ceremony were Army chief, Gen Tan Sri Zulkifli Mohd Zin, Navy chief, Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar and Air Force chief, Gen Tan Sri Rodzali Daud.
