KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3 DECEMBER, 2011: Umno Youth will present its list of candidates for the 13th general election to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak within two months.

Its chief, Khairy Jamaluddin, said he was currently in the process of evaluating winnable candidates and that the evaluation involved a report from the grassroots level.

"For Umno Youth, it is the quality, not the quantity of candidates. The (list of) 40 candidates we are sending are all winnable. However, when the PM (prime minister) makes his decision, we will support whoever is the candidate.

"I am not the youth head who will appeal two to three times, even if my name is absent. We will not wait outside of Seri Perdana to appeal for any candidate.

"We will endorse any decision of the PM," he told reporters after winding up the debate on Umno Youth on the last day of the 2011 Umno General Assembly here today.

Khairy advised the movement's candidates who were not selected, and their supporters, not to sabotage the party as was the case in the previous general election.

He said in the 2008 general election, there were many constituencies in Kedah, where the majority obtained by the Barisan Nasional was less than the number of spoilt votes.

"This meant there was an element of sabotage. In fact, there were party members who did not want to help out by going overseas, and there were others who did not want to vote," he said.

Asked on Umno Youth's strategy to attract more university students to join the party, Khairy said the movement would embark on new groundwork to approach the group.

"We have started attracting university students into Umno. I have met several student leaders and I will work with Umno Higher Education Bureau chairman Datuk Razali Ibrahim, who is also Umno Youth vice-chief.

"I will cooperate with him to head a movement to approach university students. We do not want the perception that university students are with the opposition. We need to open up more space for them," he said.

Najib, who is also Umno president, announced on Nov 24 that the government would amend the Universities and University Colleges Act 1974 to enable university students who attained 21 years of age to participate in politics.

Commenting on the debators at the assembly, Khairy said he was proud that many of the youth movement members were made speakers representing their respective states.

"Usually, Umno Youth members would only represent Umno Youth. We could see many debators from Umno Youth representing their states, among them were Pahang, Federal Territory, Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan.

"This is what is meant by empowering youths in the party," he added.
