KUALA TERENGGANU: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will announce the name of the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Kuala Besut by-election on Tuesday.Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said said Muhyiddin, who is also BN deputy chairman and the by-election director, will be in Terengganu on that day to make the announcement.
Commenting on the polling date, which has been set for July 24, Ahmad said all government department heads in Kuala Besut would be instructed to give their subordinates time off to cast their votes as the voting day falls on a Wednesday.
"We believe that voters would not want to miss the chance to cast their votes although polling day is on a working day," he said after visiting three siblings, believed to be abuse victims, warded at the Day Care ward of the Sultanah Nur Zahirah hospital here yesterday.
Ahmad said he was confident that BN would retain the Kuala Besut state seat and might even score a bigger majority.
Based on the electorall roll, there are 17,683 voters in Kuala Besut, with 16,534 ordinary voters, 1,134 military personnel and their spouses, 14 policemen and one absentee voter who lives abroad.
Ahmad declined to comment on the possibility that there might be a hung state assembly resulting in a unity government being formed, should BN lose in Kuala Besut.
"The opposition have many speculations but we should instead just wait for the results for any conclusion."
