We’ve all probably read a list of Malaysia’s wealthiest individuals a few times during the course of our life. But as we scroll down that list, have you noticed that it is typically male-oriented?

Earlier this year, the National Statistics Department reported that there is still a worrying wage gap between men and women in the country. Women on average get paid 8.4% lower than men for doing the same job. That is an increase of 0.2% compared to the differences of wages in 2012.

However, that doesn’t mean that our country is in lack of wealthy women. The website SaveMoney has listed down Malaysia’s Top 5 richest females, and here they are:

1) Puan Seri Lee Kim Hua

Most Malaysians would know who Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong is – the man who is synonymously associated with Genting Highlands and the transformation of its empire. He used to top the list of the wealthiest individuals in the country, but his passing in 2007 meant that his wealth was handed down to his family. Puan Seri Lim Kim Hua, his wife, has inherited a huge bulk of that wealth and now has a net worth of RM21.32 billion.

2) Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh

Due to her status as an international movie star, Yeoh is probably one of the most globally recognisable Malaysians. The star of films such as Tomorrow Never Dies, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Police Story 3, and Memoirs of a Geisha has a net worth of $245 million. And none of that is attributed to her billionaire husband, Jean Todt.

3) Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza

As much as Michelle Yeoh is globally recognisable, in homeland, she comes nowhere close to household name Siti Nurhaliza. The 36-year-old singer has currently been listed as one of Malaysia's richest, most-influential, most award-winning, and most single-produced artists. To date, she has sold more than 4.9 million in record sales. Aside that, having now evolved into a businesswoman, she has a net worth of RM50 million.

4) Pauline Chai

Currently making headlines for her divorce battle with Dr. Khoo Kay Peng – the owner of the popular Laura Ashley chain of stores, Chai is the former Miss Malaysia 1969. Although she claims that she doesn’t care for the tycoon’s money, she told a judge that she can no longer afford to spend thousands of pounds on her hobby of decorating dolls’ houses. The trial didn’t go as well as she liked as she was ‘only’ granted a monthly payment of RM244,568, plus full ‘custody’ of her 1,000 pair of shoes.

5) Datuk Nicol Ann David

With the fate of badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei hanging by a thread, Nicol is the nation’s only hope of a number 1 ranking world class athlete. Not only is she the first Asian woman to achieve this, but has held the position for 105 consecutive months since 2006. Widely considered the greatest female squash player of all- time, her tournament winnings and sponsorships alone amount to a hefty RM1.4 million. And all this at the relatively young age of 31!
