Scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu starting at 2pm on 29 August 2015, the Bersih 4.0 rally has been the focal point of much controversy, legal debate and political drama. The rally organizers intend to continue the event until Sunday midnight, 30 August 2015.

Various rallies were also held worldwide on August 29 spanning different time zones around the world. Following are images of the global rallies compiled from global media reports as well as the @GlobalBersihTwitter post of rallies taking place in Sydney, Australia, Ontario, Canada, Suzhou, China and Taipei, Taiwan. Other places reported to have held the rally include far flung corners of the world like Ulaanbatur in Mongolia, and Christchurch, New Zealand.

SUNDAY (AUGUST 30, 2015)

12:00AM The crowd sings Negaraku to conclude the rally. The 34 hours BERSIH 4.0 officially comes to an end with the Chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah leading the countdown to Merdeka. 

The rally organizers describe BERSHI 4.0 as achieving a new milestone in the people's revolution, the culmination of the series of past BERSIH protests. This time the organizers hailed the success of the rally being concluded without any riots or public disorder. There have been no reports of rally participants in the Dataran Merdeka venue being arrested to date.

11:24PM BERSIH chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah has approached the police to negotiate for extending the rally hours from 12 midnight to 1am to allow for cleaning and inspection of the rally venue.

11:12PM DAP adviser LIm Kit Siang asserts that over 300,000 have turned out to support BERSIH 4.0.  He declared those present tonight as coming to welcome 'Merdeka'. In his speech, Kit Siang expressed his gratitude to Tun M for showing his support for the rally.

11:00PM One more hour left to go as PKR President Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail takes to the stage to address the crowd.

10:00PM While bands continue to entertain and renditions of 'Sejahtera Malaysia' and 'Standing In The Eye Of The World' can be heard from the makeshift stage, some rally participants seem overcome by boredom and are waiting on the sidelines for the countdown to conclude.

9:40PM The crowd at the rally remains in high spirits. Music entertainment returns to liven the atmosphere further. According to official observers of the Bersih rally present, there is an estimated 20,000 strong turnout at the moment with the numbers likely to increase further as the night progresses. Besides the police, these impartial observers are also doing their part to ensure people's rights are observed and the law observed.

9:00PM With 3 hours left before midnight, the atmosphere at the rally has turned lively with chants and shouting of slogans. Thousands of protesters have turned on their lights in unison while shouting 'Bersih'.


8:50PM Rafizi Ramli then takes the stage to deliver his speech that is widely expected to be provocative. He claims he will disclose new information about a new warship deal  being planned by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak

8:40PM One of the participant, Hasmah, 56 claims that she joins the rally to show her discontent towards the government. She went on to share her worries that the younger generation were unhappy with the PM's wife and the need for the government to regain the people's trust.

Meanwhile the chairman of Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) Mohamad Sabu has arrived at the rally location.

8:30PM While waiting for the Opposition leaders to show up for tonight's highlight at 9pm, participants are still blowing the vuvuzela, while others are taking shelter due to rain.

8:05PM A kuliah Maghrib is being delivered by an ustaz in front of the Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad.

8:00PM Thousands of protesters have regrouped and returned to reoccupy the areas around Masjid Jamek and outside Dataran Merdeka,  PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa has also been sighted among the crowd.

7:30PM An Indian man  believed to be a civilian in an intoxicated state caused a stir but the police manage to deter any untoward incident and the situation is now under control.

6:50PM Dang Wangi Police Chief ASP Zainol Samah has announced that the rumour that the Merdeka Eve concert scheduled to be held at Dataran Merdeka has ben rescheduled to another location is untrue because the concert had from the beginning been planned for the Bukit Jalil Stadium. He also estimates that there are about 15,000 rally participants present at the moment.

6:15PM In the final lap of 6 remaining hours of the Bersih 4.0 rally, Rafizi Ramli gives a rousing speech, declaring that no one can deter the protesters' right to see the rally to its penultimate ending tonight.

6:00PM We can see policemen are in control of situation around Dataran Merdeka by manning blockades. Participants are milling around the viciniity of Dataran Merdeka. According to the police on duty at the location, they do not foresee any escalation in security for the moment until 8pm tonight.

5:40PM Until now, the situation is still under control. Participants are entertained with acrobatic acts by representatives of Bersih.

5:25PM About an hour ago, Tun M had made a visit to the rally site at Central Market. According to information shared at the #Bersih4 Twitter post, Tun M took the KTM public transport to get to the venue.

He spoke to the crowd present, explaining that he had to address the protesters directly as other sources of getting his views across have been controlled by the ruling authorities. He spoke critically about his successor PM Najib, again declaring that he no longer supports him and reaffirming his disapproval of the much disputed RM2.6 billion donation used as election funding in GE13. His speech was punctuated by shouts of 'Bersih' and 'Reformasi'.

5:08PM Media are now preparing because former PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is expected to make another visit to the rally again. In the meantime, the situation is still under control where participants are still lingering around the Dataran Merdeka area.

4:30PM Organizers have directed rally participants to take a break explaiing that the programme will resume at 9pm tonight.  According to the organizers, the highlight of the Bersih 4.0 programme will take place tonight. 

4:25PM Also present were Chairman of Bersih 4.0 Maria Chin Abdullah and former Bersih 2 president Datuk S Ambiga. Maria gave a short announcement reminding participants to keep the area clean and informed Muslim participants that a place to perform prayers is provided. 

4:20PM PKR vice-president Tian Chua addressed the thousands of participants present. He thanked the PM for uniting all Malaysians to show their strength today. In his speech, he urged the government to stop lying to the people. "Rakyat do not want to see an unfair election. Rakyat do not want to see corruption," he declared.

4:00PM It's getting noisier because some protesters are blowing the vuvuzela and chanting "Kita Lawan". Roads around Jalan Tun Perak and Jalan TAR are congested due to the increasing number of protesters.

3:55PM Representative from KBU university just finished delivering a speech urging for change in the way the ruling government administer the country for the nation's sake.

3:45 PM People are singing Negaraku as a sign of solidarity (rain keeps pouring).

3:41 PM Organizers urge participants to SMS, Facebook and Tweet for others to come join the rally. 

3:40 PM Situation around Masjid Jamek area to Dataran Merdeka is a bit chaotic because protesters are running to find a place to avoid the rain. 25 hours has passed since BERSIH 4.0 started and a further 9 hours left till midnight.

3:00 PM A makeshift marching band came by, making music using ordinary household materials.

2:47PM No sign of any major figures yet, or who has given a speech on stage.

2:44PM Everyone is waiting for someone to say something and most people are now backing out, moving away from Dataran Merdeka. Unfortunately, the flower beds surrounding the grounds have been trampled despite the notice to keep off the landscaping.

2:18PM Organizers claim there's 20,000 participant.. They asked the Malays to raise their hands, then Chinese. It was noticeable there are more Chinese protesters here. Protesters are challenging Najib to come down to the rally venue.

1:34PM Rally participants start streaming back after lunch in droves chanting 'Bersih' and moving in huge numbers towards Dataran Merdeka. Participants in wheelchairs were spotted in the crowd. All the way down Masjid Jamek is an endless column of yellow tees.

12:08PM Rally organizers have announced a lunch break until 2pm. Weather conditions have decided to turn favourable, windy and cloudy. Meanwhile the police have continued their steadfast duty guarding the barricades to Dataran Merdeka and ensuring order is maintained throughout the event.

11:43AM The mood at the rally site is relaxed as street bands keep the crowd entertained and motivational speakers alternate to keep the protestors spirits high.

11:21AM Jaringan Kampung Orang Asli Semenanjung Malaysia (JKOASM) on the move. They had marched from the station and are making their way through the crowd to reach Dataran Merdeka.

11:11AM Some rally participants seek shelter from the heat as the midday sun starts to take its toll.

10:40AM Crowds cheer as a Malay band sings several popular Chinese songs such as 'Amani' from the band Hong Kong Beyond. Music entertainment and dances will continue untill lunch time.

10:22AM People continue to sing patriotic songs to keep their spirits high for the long day ahead.

10:04AM "Where are the Malays? It doesn't matter as we're all here. As long as we're all Malaysians" - Parit Buntar MP Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa takes the stage to deliver his speech. Jets are seen making regular flyovers at an extremely low altitude as rehearsals for tomorrow's Merdeka celebration is in progress.

9:25AM English prayers are made for "peace and security  and the courage to bear witness, a nation that is free from corruption, a nation that cares for the loved and the lost.

9:21AM Islamic prayers are made on the make shift stage. Helicopters are seen on a fly pass in a single formation.

9:17AM  Protesters who stayed overnight mostly slept on the pavements of Masjid Jamek. Most slept on cardboard and some had brought a sleeping bag. They look sleepy still, and claimed that "last night's  sleep was peaceful", with no untoward probrems. Toilets have been allocated near the church and free drinks were given last night.

9:00AM Protesters stream in from train stations onto various locales around Dataran Merdeka as they continue from yesterday's session. The mood is light  and the weather kind.



10:00PM Meanwhile student activist Khairol Najib Hashim shared on the #Bersih4 Twitter post that the gathering of BERSIH 4.0 university students in the Jalan Parlimen area will set up camp for the night, sharing a photo of the carnival-like atmosphere at the rally site.

9:20PM: Some fatigued rally participants are seen turning in for the night at the rally area near Masjid Jamek LRT station, as reported by Awani. Earlier activist Mandeep Singh assured the authorities that the rally participants will not attempt to breach the barricades leading to Dataran Merdeka.

8:00PM: Earlier this evening, Awani reported that former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad arrived at the Dataran Merdeka rally venue accompanied by his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali. He mingled with rally participants briefly before leaving shortly after at 7:45pm.  His daughter Marina Mahathir later shared on her Twitter post the unannounced visit by her father at the BERSIH 4.0 with the message, "Love ya, Dad!! #BERSIH4."

5:50PM: Some rally participants in the vicinity of Dataran Merdeka begin to disperse in different directions. According to participants, rally organizers have scheduled some programmes for later tonight at 9pm but there is yet to be confirmation on the ground. There have also been no news of arrests by the police today.

5:32PM: The crowd on the roads surrounding Dataran Merdeka have started to thin out, according to Malaysian Digest's reporter on the ground. Some of the rally participants are making their ways home as they seek refuge from the afternoon heat, and to recharge as they aim to come back tomorrow which is more significant, being the eve of Merdeka, according to police at the scene.

5:10PM: Opposition leaders continue to deliver fiery speeches to the assembled crowd, prompting rally participants to respond with various chants and shouting slogans. A helicopter can be seen hovering over the vicinity of Dataran Merdeka.

4:30PM: Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan takes over the mike to deliver her speech. "Today, we are united as one. We are set to accomplish many things," she says to the crowd who have bravely assembled under the scorching sun.

4:20PM: Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah is now delivering her speech to the rally participants, claiming: "We want Najib to step down; we want to revive the spirit of 'Reformasi' for the coming election. We want to see an overhaul of Parliament, SPRM, the Federal Courts and the MACC. We call for the abolition for any unjust laws."

4:18PM:  Police, DBKL and Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel have been put on standy, as they tighten the security in the vicinity.

4:15PM: One of the Opposition leaders can be heard addressing the crowd from the back of a pick-up truck, saying: "Please be ready as it's going to start anytime soon."

3:40PM: BERSIH 4.0 rally participants and scores of Opposition leaders begin to fill up in the front line of the group in front of Dataran Merdeka, as they chant, "Bersih! Bersih!". Police and security personel can be seen on standy mode to upkeep the public order.

3:00pm The crowd arriving outside Dataran Merdeka has started to amass with various groups coming from different directions including from Masjid Jamek and Sogo. The build-up of rally participants have started taking up all available public space in the vicinity outside Dataran Merdeka.

2:50pm The crowds at the Sogo assembly point have started to swell. Security appears to be controlled.

2:15pm Three Malaysian Red Crescent mobile units have arrived, parking in the store frontage area of the shopping complex.

2:13pm At the Sogo assembly, rally organisers read out the list of demands of BERSIH 4.0.

2:10pm Shops in the vicinity of the Sogo assembly area have started pulling down their store shutters one by one to close their businesses for the day. Almost all stores in the immediate area of the rally have shut down for the day.

2:00pm The authorities appear to have started taking steps to tighten security in the vicinity of the Sogo and Dataran Merdeka assembly points. Rally participants assembled can be heard singing 'Negaraku'.

1:45pm Traffic in the vicinity of Sogo appears to be controlled with few cars on the road. Another group of rally participants have been spotted marching from the citycentre towards the Sogo assembly point.

1:40pm The rally proper finally got underway as representatives of the organizers alighted on a makeshift stage on the back of a pickup truck parked outside Sogo Shopping Complex.

1:10pm Rally participants, both young and old came prepared for all weather conditions, including sunhats and umbrellas. Around the city, other BERSIH supporters have also started congregating, including near Central Market and a turnout representing the Orang Asli community has been spotted in Brickfields.

1:00pm  By now, small crowds have started gathering at the assigned meeting points. Cries of 'reformasi' can be heard.

In Kuala Lumpur, as Saturday morning dawns, small groups of supporters clad in distinctive yellow T-shirts have started to converge in the city. As early as 11:00am this morning, a handful of Bersih 4.0 demonstrators have started to assemble at the Sogo Shopping Complex here.
