PUTRAJAYA -- By 2050, young Malaysians should transform Malaysia into a nation of calibre with a set of high values and new mindset, says Plantation Industry and Commodities (MPIC) Minister Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong.

In making the  call, he urged 40 finalists of the Junior Chamber International (JCI)  Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian Awards 2017 to begin planning now to execute  and change the way of thinking to become competitive, rather than wait and hope for opportunities to fall on their lap.

"To realise the Transformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50) plan, I want to see this young generation give importance to ideas, mindset, our way of thinking and a good set of values. Most youths have asked me how Malaysia's per capita or Government Transformation Programme would be.

"Although the economic data is important for the country's growth, there are other important factors for TN50. I am a strong believer in the country's Happiness Report,” he told a press conference introducing the 40 finalists at his ministry here today.

Meanwhile, Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian Awards 2017 organising chairman Ernest Tan said the 40 finalists aged between 18 and 40 were selected from 120 applications following their outstanding achievement or contribution in 10 categories, namely  business, economic and entrepreneurial accomplishment.

Others are political, legal or governmental affairs; academic leadership; cultural achievement; moral or environmental leadership; contribution to children, world peace or human rights; humanitarian or voluntary leadership; scientific or technological development; personal improvement and medical innovation.

According to Tan, the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians award presentation ceremony will be held at the Sunway Resort & Spa Hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 9.

“Winners will be selected by a group of judges based on several criteria, which includes their achievements, contributions and how their achievements in leadership may inspire others to strive to their fullest potential,” he added.
