Flood Situation Improves Markedly In Seberang Prai Utara; Relief Centres Closed

GEORGE TOWN: The flood situation in Penang has improved significantly with all relief centres in Seberang Prai Utara, the worst hit district, closed.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said 307 flood victims housed at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Agama Labuh Banting since last Saturday’s major flood and storm, were allowed to return home this morning.

At the height of the floods, more than 4,000 people in the district were evacuated.

Meanwhile, some 220 people in the Seberang Prai Tengah district are still taking shelter at Dewan Banjir Guar Jering.

It is the only relief centre in the district still open.

A 17-hour storm last Saturday paralysed the state, leading to a mega flood, landslides and uprooted trees.

Thousand were displaced, while seven deaths were reported.

While the situation on the island returned to normal within two days, such was not the case on the mainland.
