More Entrepreneurs Urged To Leverage Opportunities Via Alibaba

KOTA BHARU -- The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) is targeting 10,000 entrepreneurs to register with Alibaba Group through the Digital Free Trade Zone in the next one year.

Its Minister, Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said to-date, a total of 1,972 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) had registered with the company, which is China’s biggest e-commerce group.

"Efforts are being undertaken by Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation and SME Corp Malaysia to attract the SMEs to join Alibaba Group," he said.

He told reporters this after officiating the SME Development and Investment Opportunities Seminar in conjunction with MITI Day 2017 East Coast Zone here today.

Mustapa said entrepreneurs who market their products through the e-commerce group would have access to a huge market with bright prospects.

"However, the participation of SME entrepreneurs from Kelantan in Alibaba Group is still small, only 16 entrepreneurs, hence we are targeting some 100 entrepreneurs from Kelantan to register with the company next year," he said, adding among the potential Kelantanese businesses were food, drinks, beauty and batik.

Mustapa added that his ministry would provide guidance to the SME entrepreneurs in the state to encourage them to capitalise on the online business opportunities.
