MELAKA -- The Melaka branch of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department seized various items worth RM6.4 million involving RM5.1 million in unpaid duty throughout operations in the first half of this year.

Its director, A. Tuang said the seizures on cigarettes made up the highest number of cases at 36, liquor (17), fireworks and firecrackers (10) and cars (four).

“Based on records, the number of cases has increased by 50 per cent in the first six months of 2018 compared to the same period last year.

“This was due to the rise of enforcement through operations, monitoring and raids,” he told a press conference here today.

Commenting further, Tuang said the single largest seizure on tobacco products involved 2.7 million cigarette sticks of various brands worth RM219,200 with unpaid duty of RM1.6 million.

A total of 30 people, aged in their 30s to 50s, were detained during the period, he added.
