Manchester City center-back Joleon Lescott (pic) insists it is nonsense to suggest they already have the Premier League title in the bag but he is relishing the chance to finish the job in the club’s biggest game in 44 years.
A win over Queens Park Rangers at home at Etihad Stadium on Sunday will see City crowned top-flight champions for the first time since 1968 – although as long as they match challengers Manchester United’s result at Sunderland, the trophy will still be theirs.
QPR’s lowly position and poor away record where they have lost 13 out of 18 games this season, has made City overwhelming favorites.
However, Lescott says it would be ‘silly’ for City to believe it will be a stroll.
“I have heard a few things have been said about how we will approach the game and that we think all we have to do is turn up, but that’s complete nonsense.
“Every time we play represent a different challenge and we will go out there with the right attitude and manner and try to get the job done.
“It’s been a great few weeks with the way we turned things around, but for us to start getting carried away now would be silly.”
Lescott won his first major trophy last season when City grabbed the FA Cup but he believes the experience of so many of his teammates in winning top honors stands City in good stead.
“We have fantastic squad with the likes of Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez, David Silva and Yaya Toure, who have all won major honors.
“So it’s easy for them to focus on big games as it comes naturally to them,” said the England international.
“For players like myself and (goalkeeper) Joe Hart, we have not really won anything major apart from the FA Cup, but we will be equally focused.
“We just need to do what we have been doing in the last few weeks, give it our all and I’m sure we will be fine.”
