Singapore Aims For Bigger Medal Haul

SEPANG – Team Singapore is aiming to improve its collection of seven gold medals in Myanmar three years ago, at the upcoming 2017 Kuala Lumpur ASEAN Para Games (APG).

Its chef de mission, Shirley Low said after all the hard work during the preparation phase, all the athletes were highly motivated as for this edition, they formed the largest away contingent from the island republic so far, with 90 athletes competing in 11 sports.

“They are really excited and since this is our biggest away contingent, we expect to put in a very good performance in every sport to improve on the seven gold medals we earned back in 2014.

“I think the athletes have been training really hard. I'm very impressed with their discipline as I've visited every team during the training stage,” she told reporters after the team’s arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), here, today.

Low said out of the 90 para athletes, 21 would make their debut at this year’s biennial Games.

She said besides having the opportunity to taste the atmosphere of an international competition, the APG would also be the best platform for the debutants to gain valuable experience that would have a positive impact on their journey as athletes

“Of course it will give them a new experience and this Games is good for their development as athletes to further compete at the international level in future,” she said.
