DUNGUN – The construction of the Dungun Velodrome Cycling Complex at Balai Besar here will be the arena to scout for more Terengganu talents in world class cycling like Mohd Azizulhasni Awang.

Youth and Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin said he wanted the project to benefit the district of Dungun in the world map as it is the birth place of the world cycling champion.

“ When it is ready, we (KBS) will assist Terengganu State Sports Council to supply bicycles to young potential riders for them to train at the veloldrome as I am confident it will the heartland of Malaysian cycling one day.

“I do not want the velodrome to be a white elephant but it should be used to unearth talents among local youths. If we can produce a world champion in Azizulhasni Awang, we hope there will be more world champions in future with the complex,” he said when laying the foundation stone of the velodrome project in the compound of Dungun UMNO office.

At the ceremony, Khairy announced a grant for RM1 million to the Terengganu State Sport Council to develop cycling in the state and named the velodrome as Azizulhasni Awang Velodrome to mark the birth place of the world cycling champion.

Khairy also said the RM12 million velodrome was expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
