KUALA LUMPUR: Obinna Nwaneri (pic) made up fr a bad day at a hypermarket in Shah Alam on Monday when he saved Super League champions Kelantan by scoring the equalizer in last night's 1-1 draw with Armed Forces in a Group B match at Selayang Stadium.
Nwaneri allegedly assaulted a company manager after the latter scolded him for queue-jumping at a cashier counter but his team member managed to stop the altercation. However, the 30-year-old centerback dramatically turned savior or Kelantan by smashing in a rebound three minutes from time.
The match was briefly stopped in the 29th minute after fans encroached the track at the packed stadium.
When Marlon Alex James shot Forces into the lead after goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat had fumbled his grounder in the 56th minute, Kelantan fans showed their disgust by throwing objects onto the pitch.
The match was later stopped for 14 minutes after fans reacted angrily to the referee's decision not to award Kelantan a penalty.
The match may be over but Nwaneri will still have to assist the police in regard to the hypermarket scuffle. Kelantan manager Azman Ibrahim said both Nwaneri and the shopper had lodged police reports.
"Let the police decide. In the meantime, Obinna will continue to play football for Kelantan," said Azman.
In another match, Kedah re-ignited their hopes of qualifying for the last eight by defeating Terengganu 2-1 for their first win in Group B.
Premier League champions Forces, however, lead the standings with seven points from two wins and a draw, followed by Kelantan on four.
In Group A, Singapore's LionsXII and Johor drew 0-0 while PKNS and Johor FC fought to a 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, FA Cup finalists Sime Darby, edged Felda United 3-2 for their first win in Group C.
Liberian international Patrick "Ronaldinho" Wleh, who threatened to quit Sime Darby after coach Ismal Zakaria chided him for his poor form last weekend, scored a brace in the 11th and 51st minutes while Faiz Isa added the other in the 23rd minute.
S Sivanesan (42nd) and Ahmad Fakri Saraani (62nd) replied for Felda.
In another group match, Negri Sembilan failed to break the deadlock in their 0-0 draw with Perak in Paroi despite dominating play in an ill-tempered match, which was also halted for crowd trouble.
Pahang stamped their mark in Group D with a 6-0 thrashing of Sarawak in Kuantan to lead the standings with seven points.
Mohd Fauzi Roslan scored a hat-trick in the 33rd, 45th and 89th minutes before Hafiz Kamal (62nd), Boris Kochkin (72nd) and R. Gopinathan (90th) completed the rout.
Selangor finally recorded their first win when they edged T-Team 1-0 in Kuala Terengganu. Captain Safiq Rahim scored off a penalty after K. Solihin was fouled in the box by T-Team's Norfazly Alias.
