BlackBerry 10 OS Review: Polished Look, With Plenty of Kinks

The good: The BlackBerry 10 OS looks terrific, and comes with many of the world-class features you'd demand from a modern OS. It also adds a few of its own signature tools for security and business users.

The bad: Despite the grown-up look, RIM's new OS is riddled with perplexing omissions and behavioral inefficiencies that wear on you over time.

The bottom line: BlackBerry lovers who can get past the rookie mistakes will find a polished-looking OS that's packed with interesting and useful features, but happy Android and iOS users won't find a reason to switch.

BlackBerry PlayBook is Outselling The New iPad

British electronics distribution specialist Context dropped a bit of a bombshell on Tuesday by claiming that Research In Motion’s (RIMM) PlayBook tablet outsold Apple’s latest iPad during the last two months of the 2012. Of course, Apple (AAPL) has its own retail stores in the UK where most in-store sales likely occur, but the sales channels monitored by Context still make up most of the electronics distribution in the UK.

According to Context, the PlayBook shifted 160,000 units and the latest-generation iPad 113,000 units over the Christmas period, giving RIM a fairly substantial lead. All iPad models combined sold 203,000 units. Of course it’s important to note that the recommended retail price of the PlayBook was £129 while the fourth-generation iPad starts at £399, but this data emphasizes an important shift in the market.

Apple Announces 128GB iPad 4 with Retina Display

Apple has, by means of a press release, announced that its fourth-gen iPad will now offer up to 128GB of internal storage- double the previous maximum configuration of 64GB. Apple has sold in excess of 120 million iPads to date, and with Phil Schiller noting of the consumer’s preference to "work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs,” it would certainly make sense for the fruit company to offer the kind of capacity reflecting the change in habits.

The new 128GB versions of the fourth-gen iPad will be available as of next Tuesday, February 5th. Both the black and white, Wi-Fi + Cellular and Wi-Fi-only models will be available with the increased capacity, with prices starting at $799 for the iPad with Wi-Fi version. Meanwhile, the iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular model will retail at $929 stateside, and both will be available in-store as well as online and through Apple’s resell partners.2012-ipadrd-gallery1-zoom

As somebody who tends to buy the largest capacity of device, I am excited by the news, if a little surprised. When Apple pushed its iDevice range up to a maximum of 64GB, I thought the progression to 128GB would be a matter of formality, but with strong emphasis on selling its iCloud service post-iOS 5, it began to look as though 64GB would be the limitation. With other companies sniffing around for a slice of the fruit company’s market share, though, it would appear Tim Cook and his troops want to issue a reminder to the tech community, and what better way to do so than offering a great deal more storage space than any other mainstream slab on the market?

With the iPad now running all the way up to 128GB, it will be intriguing to see if the iPhone follows suit. The Cupertino’s market-leading tablet certainly benefits more from the larger capacity (larger apps, more likely to run HD video, and so forth), but seldom is a feature implemented on one and not the other. This release will surely prompt some iPhone users to call for more space, but for the time being, the company’s iconic slab is the only iOS device to reach these dizzy new heights.

ASUS MeMo Pad Makes Quiet post-CES Debut, 16GB Storage for USD150

Despite a strong showing of slates in 2012, ASUS showed precious few tablets at CES last week. Missing from the show? Its latest MeMo Pad -- a 7-inch 1024 x 600 tablet rocking Jelly Bean, 16GB of storage, a Mali 400 GPU, 1GB of RAM and a 1MP front-facing camera. ASUS didn't name the tablet by model number, but it's a dead ringer for the ME172V that slipped through GLBenchmarks last month, and fits the bill of a recent federal authorization. The new slab isn't quite as nice as the Nexus 7 its predecessor became, but at $150, it's a little easier on the wallet. ASUS also cautions buyers that the MeMo pad is a "tablet-only product," clarifying that it won't be getting a Transformer Pad-like keyboard dock -- assuming you could type on a 7-inch keyboard, that is. Check out the slate's official press release after the break.

The Sound Of A Red-Hot Ball Of Nickel Being Dropped Into A Cup Of Water

This is a short video of a red-hot ball of nickel being dropped into a cup of water, and the resulting noises it makes. They're funny. I especially liked the very end, it reminded me of the sound you hear whenever you teleport somewhere. Speaking of -- I can't even tell you how many times I've arrived somewhere with mismatched body parts.

Minority Report Gets Real With Displair's Multitouch Fogscreen

While fogscreens aren't new, Displair blew us away two years ago by adding multitouch gestures to its fogscreen projections. At CES 2013, we got to try the technology for ourselves and we're every bit as impressed by its potential to bring us closer to the fluid gesture control seen in Minority Report.
