A 30-year-old woman died after a surgery in Trichy to remove a wad of cotton left in her abdomen from a botched hysterectomy six months earlier.

Makkal Osaireported that Toulath Parveen from Tamil Nadu had undergone the operation on Aug 21 but died four days later after her health deteriorated. Her sister Mehraj Kani said the mother-of-four and her husband Raja Mohammad, 38, had decided that she should have a hysterectomy on the advice of doctors.

Doctors at a public hospital performed the operation on Feb 4. A week after the surgery, she experienced severe pain in her stomach.

The family eventually sent her to another hospital where tests revealed that the previous doctors had inadvertently left a wad of cotton in her abdominal cavity during the February operation.
