PETALING JAYA: Multimedia Research Lab Sdn Bhd (MRL) a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mlabs Systems Berhad, announced its collaboration agreement with Onliner Company Limited (Onliner), a Bangkok-based company, for the provision of free Wi-Fi and e-commerce services in Bangkok’s legendary Chatuchak market.

As the Wi-Fi service is already deployed and operational, the collaboration looks towards the commercializing of the first of its kind Online-to-Offline (O2O) marketplace that is unique to Chatuchak, Mlabs announced in the press conference today.

The signing ceremony between Mlabs and Onliner was also held at the same time.

The development roadmap for MRL and Onliners is to enable the bargaining of pricing for bulk purchases via video streaming between a buyer anywhere in the world with retailers in Chathucak.

They will also jointly develop mobile applications that can provide novel and unique online trading services to tap the large number of visitors at the market with plans for the introduction of an e-payment or e-wallet to shoppers for a safer, cashless market place.

The day to day operations of the project, its Wi-Fi and e-commerce services and facilities will be managed by Onliner while MRL will support by providing multimedia video conferencing and related technology to enhance the functionality of the project.

“MRL is looking to commit up to RM800,000 in IT support in the initial stage and will consider a higher commitment when Onliner secures similar projects in Thailand and overseas.

“MRL is confident of achieving a 15% return per annum on its investment in the initial two-year period of the project.

“This collaboration will allow MRL to showcase its multimedia video conferencing and related technology to an international market and to exploit the vast opportunities that exist for replicating similar set-ups in shopping malls, airports and public places with high consumer traffic locally and regionally,” said Professor Sureswaran Ramadass, Director of Mlabs Systems Berhad.

The feasibility of this project is proven by the upward trend in Internet advertising in Thailand and Ramadass says that they are looking forward to be able to contribute to the success of this project, which is the first of such sites targeted throughout Indo-China by the group.
