KUALA LUMPUR, 25 JUNE, 2010: The MIC is against any move to abolish the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination.

Its president, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, appealed to Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin not to proceed with the proposal, saying that "it will be a grave mistake," to do so.

He said the examination was aimed at assessing the pupils’ capabilities and achievements throughout their primary education.

"The UPSR was introduced based on expert opinion because they (the experts) are aware of its usefulness in assessing the pupils’ minds after a certain period.

"If the UPSR is abolished, the pupils will not have the initiative to study and will become mere machines, while the teachers also will not have or take the initiative to prepare their pu pils for assessment," he said in a statement here today.

He was commenting on Muhyiddin’s statement on June 20 that the ministry had proposed that the UPSR and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) be abolished to make the education system less examination-oriented to achieve the desired objective of a holistic education.

Samy Vellu said that with more and more pupils in Tamil schools scoring straight As in the UPSR every year, the examination had proven its worthiness.

He said Malaysia should not emulate the education systems in other countries but instead should have its own standard.

He would bring up the matter to the prime minister, he added.
