Over 480,000 People Leave Haiti's Capital | Print |

PORT-AU-PRINCE, 4 FEB, 2010: At least 482,000 people have left Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince since the Jan 12 earthquake, the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs said Wednesday, reported China's Xinhua news agency.

They have gone to their relatives or friends for shelter in nearby towns which are not affected by the earthquake, the UN agency said.

Haitian authorities have helped 235,000 people leave Port-au-Prince, most of whom were taken to nearby villages with temporary shelter.

According to the UN, food was running out in Grande Anse, Nippes and Plateau due to an increased influx of people.

The outgoing population is also straining the treatment capacity of the medical centers at the migrant destinations for a lack of equipment and medicine.
