LIMA,25 JANUARY, 2012:  Peru's Lima Rimac district will deploy a group of "RoboCop" municipal security staff or "Serenazgo" hoping to cut crime by 30 percent in the next few months.  Mayor Enrique Peramas announced that forty of the 'RoboCops', as they are known locally, will be patrolling the streets of Rimac starting Feb 2.

He also announced plans to buy forty video surveillance cameras to tighten security in one of the oldest districts of the Peruvian capital.

The launch of the new security measures coincides with the 92nd anniversary of the founding of Rimac, located north of the Cercado de Lima, across the River Rímac.

The district is part of the historical city center and is accessed by a series of bridges, one of which is the oldest bridge in Lima, the Puente de Piedra, constructed in 1608.
