CARACAS, 12 MAY, 2012: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced Friday that his anti-cancer radiotherapy treatment in Cuba was a success, Xinhua news agency reported.

Chavez made the announcement shortly after returning from Cuba's capital Havana, telling supporters he had successfully completed his medical treatment there.

In a lively televised speech at the Simon Bolivar International Airport, Chavez expressed his optimism that he would "return to the front line of the battle" to promote socialist revolution alongside the Venezuelan people.

Chavez, 57, travelled to Cuba on April 30 for a fifth round of radiation therapy to treat cancer that doctors detected last June. He had earlier undergone two operations to remove cancerous tumors in his pelvic area.

Local media said that health problems are complicating the president's bid to win a third six-year presidential term and to continue his socialist reforms.

Recent polls, however, showed that Chavez continues to enjoy the overwhelming support of his people, with nearly 60 percent saying they would vote for him in the upcoming presidential election.
